Violet Veil — Solo Exhibition by Laura Zhang
Violet Veil centres on the colour violet — the shade associated with the crown chakra (energy centre) located at the top of the head, a symbol of clarity, spirituality, and connection beyond the self. This interest aligns closely with Zhang’s broader artistic practice. Laura Zhang is an abstract artist whose work lives in the space between. Born on Hong Kong’s Lamma Island and now based in France, her repetitive, meditative painting process explores the tensions and harmonies within core dualities — among them Eastern and Western perspectives, natural and man-made structures, and internal and external landscapes.
Zhang’s exploration of the crown chakra is informed by her curiosity in modern yoga, where contemporary interpretations of Hindu and Buddhist philosophies have influenced her approach to grounding, release, and navigating the space between inner and outer worlds.
The paintings in Violet Veil unfold through intuitive, process-led methods: layered mark-making, gradual accumulation, and a willingness to let images surface on their own terms. These works extend Zhang’s evolving dialogue between the tactile and the digital. Following a recent series of major commissions for Louis Vuitton across Asia, her practice now incorporates the visual language of cutting, pasting, and imposing — gestures that echo screen-based interactions as well as the fragmented rhythms of memory and movement.
Working from her studio in the French Alps, Zhang reflects on the shifting geographies that shape her sense of home and identity. Returning to Hong Kong through this body of work, Violet Veil becomes a contemplative space where the physical and the spiritual, the chaotic and the harmonious, and the self and the other coexist.
The exhibition features poetry and sonic experiences by movement and sound artist Jane Kim, who works between Hong Kong and Berlin, alongside soundscaping by Singaporean DJ Yadin Moha. Hosted by the Extension — an emerging multi-functional gathering space in the close-knit neighbourhood of Tai Hang — the exhibition becomes a dynamic playground for artist-led creative collectivity.
Violet Veil invites viewers into a world where connection, tenderness, and hope feel possible through vibration, gesture, and presence.
